The next seminars on data storytelling will probably start in the summer semester 2026.

Von der Datenanalyse zur Datengeschichte - Datenanalyseergebnisse adressatengerecht kommunizieren (german)

Current social debates on the coronavirus pandemic and climate change highlight the importance of communicating data analysis results to the general public and political decision-makers in a way that is appropriate for the target group. The aim of the blended learning course with asynchronous and synchronous parts is to teach data storytelling on both a theoretical and practical level. Following a flipped classroom approach, participants first acquire the basics in the areas of data visualisation and storytelling that are central to data storytelling with the support of self-study units and ideally deepen their existing knowledge in the field of quantitative data analysis. In the subsequent synchronous practical phase, participants work in interdisciplinary teams to create their own data stories based on open data sets from the city of Bielefeld. This collaborative work phase is supported by tutorials and data experts from various disciplines. After successful peer assessment of their data story, participants will have the opportunity to publish it on the Data Story Centre platform of Bielefeld University.

Geschichte schreiben mit Daten. Data Stories in der Geschichtswissenschaft (german)

Data is becoming increasingly important in today's world. At the same time, it is perceived as a given and objective because it controls decision-making processes at various levels of society. As historians, we are also called upon to take a critical look at the processes of the present. This is what this seminar aims to do, in which the critical handling of data will be practised by creating data stories.
We will look at text mining methods for historical sources and work together to develop data stories that narrativise this data with the support of visualisations.

The course will be held at the beginning and end of the semester together with students and teaching staff from Literature and Educational Science. Joint questions are developed and a student conference is held at the end. Students will write their own data story for the examination, which will then be published in the university's Data Story Centre if possible.

Daten in Studium und Alltag: Von der Datenbeschaffung zur Digitalen Selbstverteidigung (german)

This course is currently not planned or offered for the coming semesters.

Data is omnipresent in our lives. This applies to our studies and working environment, but also in our private lives and in social and political discourse. Questions such as "How do I research data sets or other sources?", "How do I avoid data loss through backups?" or "How can I best organise my (research) data?" arise during our studies.

But we are also confronted with data-related decisions and questions in our private lives on a daily basis. For example, "Should I install a certain app?" or "Is it really necessary to painstakingly adjust the cookie settings for websites?", "What do large technology companies or streaming services actually know about me?". After a general introduction to the topic, the first section of the event will deal with more fundamental questions of information and data literacy in higher education. A second block of content will deal with the topic of data protection and digital self-defence, including in the private sphere. Employees of Bielefeld University Library and members of the Digitalcourage Bielefeld university group will take part in the seminar.
